DOT Pipeline Operations Compliance Calendar (49 CFR 192 & 195)
DOT pipeline operators face a complex web of recurring compliance deadlines under 49 CFR Part 192 (gas pipelines) and 49 CFR Part 195 (hazardous liquid pipelines). Leak surveys, cathodic protection monitoring, valve inspections, integrity assessments, operator qualifications, and public awareness programs all operate on overlapping cycles ranging from bimonthly to every 10 years.
Our DOT Pipeline Safety Software and Compliance Calendar work together to ensure every O&M activity, integrity assessment, inspection, and training requirement is scheduled, assigned, tracked, and audit-ready.
Key Pipeline Operations Compliance Deadlines
Leak Surveys
Conduct leak surveys per 192.706 (transmission) and 192.723 (distribution). Business districts and Class 3/4 locations require annual surveys. Class 1/2 locations at intervals up to 3-5 years depending on system type.
Cathodic Protection Testing
Test each cathodically protected pipeline at least once per calendar year at intervals not exceeding 15 months per 192.465/195.573. Verify adequate protection levels.
Rectifier Inspections
Inspect rectifiers and other CP monitoring devices at intervals not exceeding 2 months per 192.465(b)/195.573(b). Conduct stray current surveys in interference areas at same frequency.
Valve Inspections & Maintenance
Inspect and partially operate each transmission line valve per 192.747 at intervals not exceeding 15 months. Inspect hazardous liquid valves per 195.420. Verify emergency shutoff capability.
Integrity Assessments
Reassess pipeline integrity at intervals not exceeding 7 years for gas transmission (192 Subpart O) and 5 years for hazardous liquids (195 Subpart H). Methods include ILI, pressure testing, direct assessment, or approved alternatives.
Operator Qualifications
Evaluate and requalify pipeline operators performing covered tasks per 192 Subpart N/195 Subpart G. Requalification intervals defined by operator qualification program.
Pipeline Patrol
Patrol pipeline right-of-way per 192.705 at intervals based on class location and conditions. Check for leaks, construction activity, washouts, and other conditions that could affect safety.
Regulator Station Inspections
Inspect and test pressure regulating and limiting stations per 192.739 at intervals not exceeding 15 months. Verify proper set points and relief device operation.
Public Awareness Program
Deliver public awareness messages to affected audiences (public, emergency responders, excavators, public officials) at intervals per 192.616/195.440 and API RP 1162.
Odorization Monitoring
Conduct periodic odorization checks per 192.625 to verify gas contains a sufficient concentration of odorant for detection at one-fifth of the lower explosive limit.
Emergency Response Plan Review
Review and update emergency procedures per 192.615/195.402. Conduct emergency response drills and coordinate with local emergency responders.
Drug & Alcohol Testing Program
Maintain anti-drug and alcohol misuse prevention program per 49 CFR 199. Conduct random testing at required annual rates, maintain MIS reports, and submit annual PHMSA reports.
Regulatory Framework
49 CFR 192 - Gas Pipelines
Transportation of natural and other gas by pipeline: design, construction, testing, O&M, integrity management, corrosion control, and operator qualifications.
49 CFR 195 - Hazardous Liquids
Transportation of hazardous liquids by pipeline: design, construction, testing, O&M, integrity management, corrosion control, and operator qualifications.
192 Subpart O - Integrity Mgmt
Gas transmission integrity management: baseline assessments, reassessments, threat identification, risk analysis, and preventive/mitigative measures.
195 Subpart H - Integrity Mgmt
Hazardous liquid integrity management: baseline assessments, 5-year reassessments, continual evaluation, and risk-based inspection methods.
192 Subpart N / 195 Subpart G
Operator qualification: identification of covered tasks, evaluation, requalification intervals, and recordkeeping.
49 CFR 199 - Drug & Alcohol
Anti-drug and alcohol misuse prevention programs for pipeline operators including random testing, MIS reporting, and PHMSA submissions.
