Powered Industrial Trucks (Forklift) Compliance Calendar Software
OSHA's Powered Industrial Trucks standard (29 CFR 1910.178) requires comprehensive operator training, performance evaluations every three years, daily pre-shift inspections, and refresher training when unsafe conditions or behaviors arise. For facilities with multiple operators across different truck types, tracking every certification expiration, re-evaluation due date, and inspection schedule requires a systematic approach.
Our Forklift Compliance Calendar Software and mobile app ensures every operator's training, evaluation, and equipment inspection is scheduled, tracked, and documented.
Key Forklift Compliance Deadlines
Operator Performance Re-Evaluation
Each operator must be evaluated at least once every three years to verify they can still operate powered industrial trucks safely and competently.
New Operator Training
Complete formal instruction, practical training, and performance evaluation before an operator is permitted to operate a powered industrial truck.
Pre-Shift Truck Inspection
Examine trucks before placing in service each day. On round-the-clock operations, examine after each shift. Remove defective trucks from service.
Refresher Training
Provide refresher training when an operator is observed operating unsafely, involved in an accident or near-miss, assigned a different truck type, or when workplace conditions change.
Truck Type-Specific Training
Provide additional training when an operator is assigned to a different type of truck than what they were originally trained on.
Preventive Maintenance
Follow manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedules for each truck including hydraulic systems, brakes, steering, tires, and safety devices.
Fuel/Charging Safety Checks
Maintain designated fueling and battery charging areas with required ventilation, fire protection, and safety equipment.
Training Documentation
Maintain certification records for each operator including name, training dates, evaluation dates, and the identity of the trainer and evaluator.
Three Components of Operator Training
29 CFR 1910.178(l) requires all three components before an operator is authorized:
1. Formal Instruction
Lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, video, or written material covering truck-related topics (operating instructions, controls, capacity, stability, refueling) and workplace-related topics (surface conditions, ramps, pedestrian traffic, hazardous areas).
2. Practical Training
Demonstrations by the trainer and practical exercises performed by the trainee under direct supervision. Includes actual truck operation in a controlled environment before operating in regular work areas.
3. Performance Evaluation
Evaluation of the operator's ability to safely operate the truck in the actual workplace. The operator must demonstrate competence before being permitted to operate independently. Must be repeated at least every 3 years.
